Steve Smith "Wachozhuga" Artist Poet Psychologist
1980 Graduate of the University of Minnesota, Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) in Visual Arts, raised within and between two distinct and often conflicting cultures, Hoca’k (Ho Chunk or Winnebago) and contemporary American and trained as a clinical psychologist, my art reflects my view through the lens of both cultures and through the mind of a psychologist. In my heart we are all related: people, animals, objects and the earth itself; this inter-relatedness is central to my view of art and the role of the artist.
In 1984 I stepped away from the professional pursuit of art and became a psychologist although in my practice I used expressive art as a part of therapy. In 2014, I equipped my office as a studio and in September 2018 I closed my practice to pursue art full time. Historically, I showed my work privately to collectors although I have recently begun to enter juried exhibitions around the country.
